About Us

The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net forever.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau

For me, some of my earliest memories are of toddling in and out of the cool Aegean Sea under the late afternoon summer sun, feelings imbued with warmth, love, and contentment. During the long, cold winters in my hometown London, I would recall the balmy summer days and the sound of waves lapping the shores of Andros, my ancestral island, which always lifted my spirits.

When summer arrived, I would return to Andros, to our small house perched on a cliff in Chora town. The waves breaking on the rocks below often lulled me into the most satisfying sleep. For most children, contentment is found in simple things, and for me, it was the sun, the sea, and the carefree freedom of island life.

As I grew older, my exploration extended to swimming and snorkeling in Andros waters and taking boat trips to distant beaches. Fascinated by the underwater world, I spent hours each day exploring and reading about marine life. Although my teenage years brought other distractions, my love for the sea remained strong. This passion led me to become a diver to experience the exotic waters I dreamed of fully.

At seventeen, I had my first open water dive in the cold, murky waters off Plymouth. Despite the challenging conditions, I was thrilled to stay underwater longer than a breath-hold, solidifying my connection with the sea.

In the following years, I saved every penny to travel and dive in alluring destinations worldwide, capturing the beauty of marine life through photography. Though adult responsibilities limited my diving trips, my passion never waned.

Eventually, my wanderlust brought me to the island of Utila in Honduras and the Utila Dive Center, the premier PADI Career Development Center in the Caribbean. It was there that I trained to become a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer under the watchful guidance of the experienced and knowledgeable staff. Subsequently, I spent many years working around the world as a scuba instructor, fulfilling a lifelong aspiration to explore new underwater realms, and developing a passion for empowering others and making the difference through teaching.

Now, as the founder of Andros Aquatic Dive Centre, I aim to share my lifelong love of the sea with others. Our centre offers top-notch training and unforgettable diving experiences in the stunning waters of Andros. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, join us to explore the vibrant underwater world that has captivated me for so many years.

Andros Island

Andros, the northernmost island of the Cyclades archipelago in Greece, is a gem that combines rich history, stunning natural beauty, and a tranquil atmosphere. Known for its verdant landscapes, Andros offers a stark contrast to the typically arid environment of the Cycladic islands. The island’s history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of habitation from the Neolithic period. Throughout the ages, Andros has been influenced by various civilizations, including the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on the island’s cultural and architectural heritage.
One of the most captivating historical sites on Andros is the ancient city of Paleopolis, which served as the island’s capital during the Classical period. Visitors can explore the remnants of this ancient city, including its ruins and the archaeological museum that houses artifacts from various periods of Andros’ history. The island also boasts several beautiful monasteries, such as the Monastery of Panachrantos, nestled high in the mountains, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into the island’s religious heritage.
Andros is also renowned for its diverse attractions that cater to a wide range of interests. Nature enthusiasts will find delight in the island’s numerous hiking trails that meander through lush valleys, rugged mountains, and picturesque villages. The Andros Route, a network of trails spanning over 100 kilometers, is particularly popular among hikers. The island’s coastline is dotted with pristine beaches, such as the golden sands of Agios Petros and the secluded bay of Achla, where crystal-clear waters invite visitors for a refreshing swim.

The main town, Chora, is a charming blend of neoclassical mansions, narrow alleys, and vibrant cultural life. The Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art in Chora is a must-visit for art lovers, featuring works by prominent Greek and international artists. Additionally, the town’s array of cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops provides ample opportunities to indulge in local cuisine and crafts.
Andros is a wonderful place to visit because it offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and serenity. Unlike some of the more tourist-heavy islands in Greece, Andros maintains a sense of authenticity and tranquility that allows visitors to truly unwind and connect with the local way of life. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins, hiking through lush landscapes, or simply relaxing on a secluded beach, Andros provides a diverse and enriching travel experience that leaves a lasting impression.
Andros Aquatic Dive Centre is based in Chora, Andros, and specifically on the beachfront of Neimborio. The centre is ideally located just a few metres from the sea and is near several restaurants, cafes, and places to stay.

FAQ

Why would I want to scuba dive?

Scuba diving is popular because it offers a unique opportunity to explore the underwater world, filled with vibrant marine life and stunning landscapes that few people get to see. It provides a sense of adventure and discovery, attracting thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. The benefits of scuba diving include improved physical fitness, as it engages various muscle groups, and enhanced mental well-being, as the tranquil underwater environment can reduce stress and promote relaxation. Additionally, scuba diving fosters a sense of awareness and respect for marine ecosystems.

What should I avoid doing before scuba diving?

Before scuba diving, avoid consuming alcohol or taking sedatives, as they can impair your judgment and reaction times. Refrain from heavy meals right before diving to prevent discomfort and potential nausea underwater. It is also important to avoid strenuous exercise just before a dive, as it can increase the risk of decompression sickness. Lastly, ensure you’re well rested and hydrated, but not overly hydrated, to maintain optimal physical condition for the dive.

When is it safe to fly after scuba diving?

Flying after scuba diving requires careful consideration to avoid decompression sickness (DCS), also known as “the bends.” The general rules are:
1. Wait at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive before flying.
2. Wait at least 18 hours after multiple dives or dives requiring decompression stops.
3. For repetitive dives over multiple days or particularly deep dives, waiting 24 hours is recommended.
These guidelines help ensure that excess nitrogen absorbed in the body during diving is sufficiently off-gassed before experiencing the reduced cabin pressure in an aircraft, which could otherwise cause nitrogen bubbles to form in the bloodstream, leading to DCS. Always consult dive tables or a dive computer for specific recommendations tailored to your dive profile.

How do I get to Andros Aquatic Dive Centre?

The dive centre is located in Chora, Andros and to reach there from Athens, you would need to take one of the numerous ferries leaving from Rafina port (30 minutes from central Athens), to Gavrio port in Andros, and then drive or take a bus to Chora, the island’s capital. The ferry takes 2 hours to reach Andros from Athens, or 1 hour on the high-speed ferry.

Is scuba diving a safe activity?

Scuba diving is widely recognized as a remarkably safe activity, largely due to the rigorous safety standards upheld by certification agencies and the diving industry. So long as proper training, equipment maintenance, and adherence to diving protocols are followed, the risk is minimal. Prioritizing safety is paramount throughout your training, ensuring a secure introduction to the sport. Millions of people of all ages partake in this immensely rewarding activity daily, experiencing its joys in a safe environment.

How deep will I dive?

Recreational scuba diving depth limits are typically set for safety and certification purposes. Some certifications allow diving up to 40 meters (130 feet) or deeper with specialized training and equipment, but most dives are conducted in warmer and more colourful waters at 12m (40 feet) or shallower. Open Water divers are certified to 18m (60 feet) and Advanced Open Water divers to 30m (100 feet). These limits help ensure divers stay within safe depth ranges to manage risks associated with increased pressure, nitrogen absorption, and potential decompression sickness.

What is the water temperature in Andros?

The sea around Andros is considered temperate water as the temperature changes with the seasons. The coldest month is February with an average water temperature of 15°c (59f) and the warmest water is in August with a 26°c (79f) average. Regardless of the water temperature you can rest assured that we have the suits, hoods, and equipment to cover this temperature range and keep our divers comfortable.

What type of dive sites do you go to?

The crystal-clear waters around Andros offer a diverse array of scuba diving sites ranging from vibrant rocky reefs and underwater caves to sites with remnants of ancient Greece. We will take you to sites featuring drop-offs, colourful marine life, and impressive rock formations, providing fascinating dive experiences for both beginners and experienced divers.

How long will my dive last?

The duration of your scuba dive will vary depending on several factors, typically ranging from 30 minutes to an hour or more. Factors influencing dive duration include your air consumption rate, depth of the dive, diving conditions (such as current strength and water temperature), and the specific dive plan or objectives. Divers often plan their dives based on these factors to ensure they have enough air supply and adhere to safe diving practices. Novice divers tend to be more nervous and consume air at a faster rate than experienced divers, but generally the more you dive the better your air consumption.

Should I buy my own scuba diving equipment?

It is not necessary to buy your own scuba equipment because most dive shops and resorts offer high-quality rental gear that is well-maintained and suited for various diving conditions. Renting equipment allows you to try different brands and styles to find what works best for you without the upfront cost. Additionally, renting can be more convenient for travel, as it eliminates the need to transport bulky gear and deal with airline restrictions and fees.
